Marietta City Schools uses the Georgia's Dept. of Education definition to classify what gifted means:

Gifted is: a student who demonstrates a high degree of intellectual and/or creative ability(ies), exhibits an exceptionally high degree of motivation, and/or excels in specific academic fields, and who needs special instruction and/or ancillary services to achieve at levels commensurate with his or her abilities.

Mission Statement: 

The mission of the Marietta City Schools’ Gifted Education program is to identify, challenge, support, and inspire gifted and talented students through differentiated learning opportunities designed to meet their unique academic, social, and emotional needs.

Model Used: 

Marietta City Schools framework for the Gifted Program follows a variety of models to reach the differing needs of all gifted learners. Not one teaching system will work for every situation or student. In elementary school the students are served in one of the three models; resource centered, clustered, or collaborative. In grades 6-12 most are served through Advanced Content, such as AP and IB courses. These students also recieve gifted services through cluster, collaborative, or intern models.

Marietta City Schools Elilgibility Criteria

Option A. A student must

a). score at the 99th percentile (for grades K-2) or at or above the 96th percentile (for grades 3- 12) on the composite or full scale score of a standardized test of mental ability (e.g. CogAT) and

 b). score at or above the 90th percentile on the total battery, or total reading, or total mathematics component of a standardized test of achievement (e.g. ITBS)

OR

Option B. A student must meet eligibility criteria in at least 3 of 4 categories:

  1. Mental Ability – at or above the 96th percentile on a composite component or full scale score of a standardized mental ability test (e.g. CogAT);
  2. Achievement – at or above the 90th percentile on the composite, total reading, or total mathematics of a standardized achievement test (e.g. ITBS);
  3. Creativity – at or above the 90th percentile on a standardized creativity test (e.g. Torrance);
  4. Motivation- at or above the 90th percentile on a standardized motivational characteristics rating scale (e.g. GRS).
